H1N1 News

Published by mkrill under Special Events, health and tagged: , , , ,

By now, all SWSD parents should have received notification that our district will be offering free H1N1 immunizations for ALL students.  Every student in the district was given the document that explains the process on October 7, 2009, and asked to take it home to their parents. The dispensing of the immunizations will take place sometime in the middle of the month of October.  If parents would like to take advantage of this opportunity, they must return the signed consent form to their child’s school and we’ll take it from there! Again, this is a free service and it will be done during the school day for those students who return the consent form.

Also, to further explain the steps we have taken in our district and an overview of how we are handling cases of H1N1 in our schools, here is a letter from Dr. Rupp that was sent home with students this week. Please contact Dr. Dion Betts, Assistant to the Superintendent, if you have any specific questions related to the H1N1 virus and how South Western is moving through this flu season.

FALL into a good book!

Guthrie Library

Guthrie Library

As the days grow shorter and cooler, maybe you and your family would like to snuggle up with a good book!  For many years, your child(ren) may have sat on your lap as you read a story to them.  Now as your child becomes a better reader, everyday learning new words and reading “thicker” books, it’s time to turn the tables.

Invite your child to share a book with you this time!  Whether it’s a beginning reader book with your first grader or a chapter book with your fourth grade child, listening to the progress your child is making as a reader will surely be rewarding!  Also consider making a trip to Guthrie Memorial Library – Hanover’s Public Library and loading up on books, cds and movies for the whole family to enjoy.  Don’t have a library card?  No problem!  Just stop by any of the circulation desks and the fine folks at the counter will get you signed up with a free library card.

Be sure to visit the Park Hills school library to find books, CDs, videotapes and DVDs about a variety of topics relevant to raising today’s child.  Ask any of your child’s teachers for more details or learn more at the school library’s website .

Have a safe and happy October!

Safety in Physical Education

Published by mkrill under P.E.

Shoes

Shoes

Each student has physical education class one time per cycle. To maintain student safety when participating in class, each student is required to wear sneakers and comfortable clothes. In addition, students must remove all jewelry. If a student gets her/his ears pierced during the course of the school year, parents are required to write a note to the physical education teacher explaining this situation, how long the new earrings need to be worn, and that they (the parents) accept the responsibility in the event that an injury results from the wearing of the jewelry.

Parents should feel free to contact Mrs. Yeager, Park Hills physical education teacher, or Mrs. Kelly with their related questions.

Lunch Guidelines

Published by mkrill under General Information and tagged: , , ,

Food Pyramid

Food Pyramid

There are five components to a school lunch. The components are: a protein, vegetable, fruit, bread, and milk. A student must have at least three of the five components each day on their lunch trays or they will be charged ala carte prices.

It is important that students, especially those in reduced or free lunch programs, have three components so they do not get charged ala carte prices on their account. If a student only wants a milk, then .50 cents will be charged to their account whether they are on a meal program or not. Milk alone is always .50 cents.
